PEACE POLE PROJECT
Peace Poles are handcrafted global symbols for peace. Their purpose is to spread the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth", and to act as a constant reminder for us to BE PEACE. There are over 250,000 Peace Poles in over 180 countries on Earth.
Some notable locations include:
The Pentagon meditation chapel; the North Pole; the Giza pyramids in Egypt; Findhorn, Scotland; the Jordan River, Israel; The Hague, Netherlands; Confucious’ burial site in Taiwan; Gorky Park, Moscow, Russia; Robben Island, South Africa; the Atomic Bomb Dome, Hiroshima; the OPEC headquarters; WTO and IMF world headquarters, etc.
My husband and I saw our first Peace Pole in 1997 in Hanalei, Kauai; we bought our own Peace Pole in September 2001.
The Peace Poles are 8 feet tall, made of British Columbia red cedar (in the U.S. they are crafted in Maple City, Michigan), and are 4, 6 or 8 sided. www.peacepoles.com A new design is made of aluminum, and is hollow, so that personal letters & photos can be inserted before the planting ceremony. There are over 300 languages from which to choose the prayer "May Peace Prevail on Earth."
The Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, President Jimmy Carter, and Pope John Paul II have dedicated Peace Poles. Peace Poles are in churches, schools, parks, public buildings, and private homes…such as ours near Phoenix, Arizona.
Over 80 Peace Poles ( 1 for each country participating ) were donated to Salt Lake City by the WPPS in honor of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
The Peace Pole Project is a part of a non-profit, nonsectarian organization called The World Peace Prayer Society. (WPPS) The world headquarters are near New York City. In 1990, the WPPS was accepted as an NGO (non-government organization) in affiliation with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations. Their sister organization, Goi Peace Foundation, is in Japan.
The WPPS was founded by Masahisa Goi in 1955 in Japan. Mr. Goi was a poet, writer and singer who dedicated his life to humanity. He said, "We are facing the age where the politics of the world must be carried out by each individual. Every individual who repeats the words ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ thus becomes a great force for realizing peace in the world." Mr Goi wrote more than 50 books on spiritual development, and is respected in Japan as a great master in his field.
In Arizona:
* Our AZDOP Campaign has supported and facilitated the dedication of 8 foot Peace Poles for the Cities of Phoenix & Baghdad, Iraq; for Starshine Academy Charter School; for Creative Living Fellowship Church of Religious Science; and for the AZDOP Campaign 2nd anniversary celebration at a friend's land in New River, AZ...a 14 foot custom made Peace Pole (see photo above). We would be honored to help you with your own Peace Pole dedications.
* We have given hundreds of "baby" Peace Poles to community experts as we explain the inclusive nonpartisan focus of the Department of Peace Campaign and proposed federal legislation to create a cabinet level Department of Peace & Nonviolence.
* In the adjacent photo taken with the Peace Pole in the Pentagon meditation chapel on Sept. 13, 2005, are left to right: David Radcliff with AZDOP Campaign advocates: Colleen O'Donnell, Beverly Janowitz-Price, Rommy Banaszczyk, Judy Springer, Terri Mansfield, Annie Loyd, Ann Marie Tate, and stained glass window of General George Washington (at Valley Forge).
