Our Vision
We envision a culture of peace that weaves trhough local legislation and those who create it thereby supporting local, national and global Dept. of Peace efforts. |
2009 DOP Conference Summary
The Department of Peace Campaign conference concluded successfully on March 23 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City Hotel headquarters in Arlington, VA near D.C. 500 volunteers from all over the U.S. attended, including over 100 high school and college Student Peace Alliance members.
Representative Dennis Kucinich is the primary sponsor of HR808 Dept. of Peace legislation. His closing talk to us on March 23 was riveting. Susanna, Rebecca, Mark and I thank all the staff and volunteers at the Peace Alliance for coordinating such an impactful conference.
There are currently 68 sponsors of HR808. We need 218 to move the bill forward in the House. Please continue to call your Rep's office in D.C. to urge them to become sponsors. Go to www.congress.org & type in your zipcode to get contact info for your Representative.
AZDOP Campaign was well represented in D.C. We were impressed with the elevated interest in the revised HR808 Dept. of Peace legislation in every office we visited on March 23 & 24 on the Hill. Our delivery was professional, intelligent, concise, and friendly.
Two key new points for you to be aware of:
- The requested budget will be $10 billion annually
- 85% of the Dept. of Peace work will focus on ending violence in the U.S.
Our friend Cap Dean, former defacto Mayor of Baghdad in 2004, wrote a personal letter to each Representative, asking them to support the creation of the Dept. of Peace. The staff were impressed with his 30 year global service to our country.
We urged the staff in 7 Congressional offices to ask our Representatives to become sponsors of HR808, joining Rep. Grijalva. We urged the staff in Senators' Kyl & McCain's offices to ask our Senators to introduce companion legislation to HR808 into the Senate.
We met face to face with:
- Rep. Raul Grijalva & Daniel Brito: Legislative Assistant
- Rep. Jeff Flake & Colleen Gilbert: Legislative Assistant
- Rep. Trent Franks & Tina Ramirez: Foreign Policy Advisor
We met and talked with these staff in the following offices:
- Rep. Dennis Kucinich: Amy Vossbrinck, Scheduler & Cate Veith, Legislative Assistant
- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords: Liz Berry, Legislative Assistant
- Rep. John Shadegg: Katie Thomas, Legislative Assistant
- Rep. Harry Mitchell: Paul Swanson, Legislative Assistant
- Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick: Mario Bonifacio, Legislative Assistant
- Rep. Ed Pastor: Karen Foster Wright, Legislative Assistant
- Sen. John McCain: Robert Fischer, Press Assistant & Mark Holzrichter, Military Legislative Fellow
- Sen. Jon Kyl: Nathan Hauser: Legislative Fellow
We also had wonderful private tours of the Supreme Court & Capitol and new Visitors' Center. The cherry blossoms and daffodils are blooming, despite the 30-50 degree weather.

Caitlin Flaherty, New Executive Director of AZDOP
On April 7, 2009, on the eve of the 6th anniversary of the founding of the Arizona Dept. of Peace Campaign, as well as the national Dept. of Peace Campaign,
Terri Mansfield passes the executive director torch to Caitlin Flaherty, at the monthly AZDOP Campaign meeting.
Terri will be busy writing her peace book, helping with family commitments, and with being a part of Dr. Edgar Mitchell's Quantrek Team, researching consciousness and alternative energies. For the latest info on the national movement www.ThePeaceAlliance.org
Year 2000 was a starting point for a major mobilization as it was the International Year for the Culture of Peace (UN Resolution A /RES/52/15): see IYCP Exhibition. On this special occasion, a global movement for a culture of peace was initiated by the United Nations to create a " grand alliance " of existing movements that unites all those already working for a culture of peace in its eight domains of action. This movement is now growing with the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010) (UN Resolution A /RES/53/25).
